As a drone photographer, capturing the world from above is one of the most exhilarating experiences. However, with great heights come great risks. The other week, I faced every drone pilot's nightmare: a flyaway incident at the stunning Peasholm Beach.

I had been out early, hoping to capture the serene morning light reflecting off the waves. Everything was going smoothly until, out of nowhere, my drone lost signal and disappeared from sight. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't regain control. My drone was gone, never to be seen again.

The Immediate Aftermath

Losing a drone is not just about the financial hit; it's also about the loss of footage and the disruption of your creative flow. Instead of dwelling on the loss, I decided to take immediate action.

Navigating DJI's Fly Away Coverage

For those who might find themselves in a similar situation, here's a step-by-step guide on how to handle a drone flyaway with DJI's Fly Away Coverage:

1. Report the Incident:

As soon as I realized my drone was gone, I reported the flyaway to DJI. This can be done through the DJI Fly app or directly on their website. Prompt reporting is crucial.

2. Submit Flight Data:

DJI requires your flight logs to analyze what went wrong. These logs provide essential data that helps DJI understand the cause of the flyaway. Thankfully, the DJI Fly app makes it easy to access and submit this information.

3. Replacement Service:

Once DJI confirms the flyaway and determines it's covered under DJI Care, they arrange a replacement drone. In my case, they offered 20% off a replacement of the same model. I took this opportunity to upgrade from the Mini 2 to the Mini 3.

Lessons Learned

While losing a drone is an unfortunate event, it serves as a valuable learning experience. Here are a few tips to minimize the risk of flyaways:

- Pre-Flight Check: Always double-check your drone's settings and ensure the environment is suitable for flying. Avoid areas with high electromagnetic interference and strong winds.

- Return-to-Home (RTH) Settings: Make sure your drone is set to return home when the signal is lost rather than hover, as this can significantly increase the chances of recovery.

- Firmware Updates: Keep your drone's firmware updated to ensure it has the latest features and fixes.

- GPS Signal: Ensure a strong GPS signal before takeoff to improve navigation accuracy.

Moving Forward

With my replacement drone on the way, I'm eager to get back in the sky and continue capturing the breathtaking views of Western Australia's coastline. Peasholm Beach, despite the mishap, remains one of my favourite spots for drone photography.
